The Power of Boundaries

The people who deserve a seat at your table won't ask you to betray yourself.

There was a time in my life when I didn't really understand what boundaries were.

I thought love meant compromising.

I thought keeping a relationship together meant putting the other person's needs before my own.

I thought if I just tried harder...

Loved harder...

Stayed quieter...

Or gave a little more...

Things would eventually get better.

Looking back now, I realise I confused sacrifice with love.

And they're not the same thing.

For a long time, I ignored the quiet voice inside me.

The one that told me something didn't feel right.

The one that asked me to speak up.

The one that reminded me I deserved to feel safe, respected, and heard.

Instead of listening to that voice, I questioned myself.

Maybe I was expecting too much.

Maybe I was overreacting.

Maybe I just needed to be more patient.

Those thoughts became louder than my intuition.

And little by little, I stopped trusting myself.

One of the hardest things about unhealthy relationships isn't always what happens.

It's how easily you can lose sight of your own needs.

You become so focused on avoiding conflict or keeping the peace that you stop asking yourself an important question.

"What do I need?"

For a long time...

I didn't know the answer.

It took me a long time to understand that boundaries aren't about controlling other people.

They're about respecting yourself.

They're the quiet decisions that say:

"This isn't okay with me."

"I deserve to be treated with kindness."

"My voice matters too."

"I don't have to accept something just because it's familiar."

Setting boundaries felt uncomfortable at first.

Not because they were wrong.

Because they were new.

Every boundary I set challenged the version of me that believed keeping everyone else happy was the only way to keep a relationship.

Over time, something remarkable happened.

The more I respected my own boundaries...

The more I respected myself.

Today, I understand that healthy relationships don't ask you to lose yourself.

They encourage you to become more of yourself.

You shouldn't have to shrink your dreams.

Silence your voice.

Question your worth.

Or abandon your peace to make a relationship work.

Love should never cost you who you are.

One of the greatest lessons I carry with me is this.

Boundaries aren't about building walls.

They're about building self-respect.

They're about recognising that your needs matter just as much as anyone else's.

They're about choosing peace over fear.

And they're about trusting yourself enough to walk away from anything that asks you to betray your own values.

If you're reading this and you've been ignoring that quiet voice inside you...

Please listen to it.

Your intuition is there for a reason.

Your feelings matter.

Your wellbeing matters.

And you never have to apologise for protecting your peace.

Because the people who truly love you won't ask you to become someone, you're not.

Boundaries didn't push the right people away.

They revealed who was willing to respect them.
