The Day I Finally Chose Myself
Maybe choosing yourself isn't selfish. Maybe it's where your next chapter begins.
09/08/2026
If you're reading this and you've spent years putting yourself last, this one is for you.
Maybe you're the person everyone relies on.
The one who keeps going.
The one who says, "I'm fine."
The one who figures things out.
Maybe you've spent so much time thinking about what everyone else needs that somewhere along the way, you stopped asking yourself a very simple question.
What do I need?
I know what that feels like.
And I also know how strange that question can feel when you haven't asked it in a very long time.
Because choosing yourself sounds simple.
Until you actually have to do it.
When did choosing yourself become selfish?
Think about that for a moment.
Why do so many of us feel guilty for saying no?
Why do we explain ourselves when we set a boundary?
Why can we encourage everyone around us to follow their dreams, yet find a hundred reasons why we shouldn't follow our own?
Why do we give second chances to everyone except ourselves?
I had to ask myself those questions too.
And I realised something.
For a long time, I thought choosing myself meant choosing against someone else.
It doesn't.
You can love your children.
Love your family.
Love your friends.
Be generous.
Be kind.
Be there for people.
And still choose yourself.
You are allowed to be someone you take care of too.
Maybe you've lost yourself a little
Sometimes losing yourself doesn't happen dramatically.
There's no moment where you suddenly realise, There I go.
It happens quietly.
You compromise something you didn't really want to compromise.
You stay silent because speaking feels harder.
You ignore something that doesn't sit right.
You put off something you desperately want to do.
You tell yourself, "Maybe later."
You become so busy surviving life that you stop participating in your own.
And eventually, you look in the mirror and wonder:
Where did I go?
I've asked that question.
Maybe you have too.
The good news is that the woman you were looking for hasn't disappeared.
She's still there.
Choosing yourself probably won't look dramatic
I used to think changing your life required some enormous, fearless decision.
I've learned differently.
Choosing yourself can be incredibly ordinary.
It's making the counselling appointment.
It's saying, "Actually, I'm not okay."
It's setting the boundary you've been afraid to set.
It's walking away from a conversation that is costing you your peace.
It's resting without explaining why you're tired.
It's applying for something even though you're scared you'll fail.
It's putting $20 aside for an idea nobody else understands yet.
It's deciding you're going to start again even though you have absolutely no idea what you're doing.
Sometimes choosing yourself is simply waking up tomorrow and deciding:
I'm going to try again.
That's how it happened for me.
There wasn't one huge moment.
There were hundreds of little ones.
And those little decisions slowly gave me my life back.
You don't need everyone to understand
This might be one of the hardest parts.
When you start changing, people notice.
When you start setting boundaries, people notice.
When you stop explaining yourself, people notice.
When you start saying no after years of saying yes...
People definitely notice.
And not everyone will understand.
That's okay.
Your life isn't a committee decision.
You don't need everyone around you to vote yes before you're allowed to change it.
That was something I had to learn.
I spent enough time wondering what people would think.
Eventually, I realised:
They don't have to live with my decisions. I do.
And neither do the people judging yours.
Please don't be afraid to ask for help
Choosing yourself doesn't mean doing everything alone.
I want to make that very clear because sometimes we confuse strength with independence.
I had counselling.
I needed support.
I needed conversations.
I needed people around me.
And if you're struggling right now, please don't believe asking for help somehow makes you less strong.
Sometimes choosing yourself sounds like:
"I need help."
There is courage in those three words.
You don't need to wait until everything falls apart before you're worthy of support.
What have you been putting off?
I want to ask you something.
What is the thing you've been telling yourself you'll do "one day"?
Maybe you want to study.
Travel.
Leave something that no longer feels right.
Start a business.
Change careers.
Get healthier.
Write something.
Make something.
Go somewhere alone.
Start counselling.
Meet new people.
Or maybe your dream isn't enormous at all.
Maybe you just want to feel like yourself again.
Whatever it is...
Why not you?
And why not start now?
Not finish it.
Not change your entire life by tomorrow.
Just start.
I started with an idea
There was a point in my own life when I didn't have everything figured out either.
I was rebuilding.
Learning.
Trying.
And somewhere in all of that came an idea.
Unbroken Athletica.
I didn't know exactly where it would lead.
I certainly didn't know that one idea would eventually become collections, music, a podcast and the journal you're reading right now.
I just knew I wanted to try.
And perhaps that's why the first collection had to be called RECLAIM.
Because that's exactly what I was learning to do.
Reclaim my confidence.
Reclaim my voice.
Reclaim my future.
Reclaim myself.
And that's what I want Unbroken to mean for you too.
Not my story.
Yours.
What do you need to reclaim?
Maybe that's the question I want to leave with you this week.
What have you lost somewhere along the way?
Your confidence?
Your independence?
Your voice?
Your identity?
Your dreams?
Your sense of fun?
Your belief in yourself?
Or simply the woman you remember being before life became complicated?
You don't need to reclaim everything today.
Pick one thing.
One tiny thing.
And start there.
You might be reading this thinking you're too old.
You're not.
You might think you've made too many mistakes.
You haven't.
You might think you've wasted too much time.
You haven't.
You might think everyone else has life figured out and you're somehow behind.
Trust me.
They don't.
Life isn't a race.
And starting again isn't something to be embarrassed about.
Sometimes starting again is the bravest thing you'll ever do.
So this week, I don't want you to finish this journal entry thinking about me.
I want you to think about you.
Ask yourself:
When was the last time I chose myself?
And if you can't remember...
Maybe today can be the day.
Do something small.
Make the call.
Write the idea down.
Set the boundary.
Take yourself for coffee.
Ask for help.
Say no.
Say yes.
Try again.
Choose one thing that moves you one tiny step closer to the life you want.
Because choosing yourself isn't one big decision.
It's hundreds of small ones.
And eventually those little decisions start adding up.
Until one day, you look around and realise something has changed.
You have.
So, to the woman reading this who has spent years choosing everyone else:
You matter too.
Your dreams matter.
Your peace matters.
Your future matters.
You matter.
Maybe your next chapter isn't about becoming someone completely different.
Maybe it's about finding the woman who's been there all along.
And finally...
choosing her.
